MS messenger & routers

Graham Cluer

I am running MS messenger (WindowsXP) behing a Netgear FR114P router
connecting to a Blueyonder HS cable modem. I have problems with audio &
video because, I presume, the router is not UPnP capable.

I am told that replacing the router with a Linksys BEFSR41 (which is
UPnP) will solve my problems.

Will it?

Greetings Graham,

It should, as the BEFSR41 has support for UPnP (depending on which "version" of it you get,
you may need to install a firmware update from the Linksys site to enable UPnP and turn it on
in the routers configuration).

However, if you look here:
http://www.fulton.net.au/qt040.htm
Version 1415 of the firmware does appear to support UPnP, so you may want to simply try
installing that before actually buying a new router.

I would look at the BEFSX41 because it has a Stateful Packet Inspection
firewall and it is also UPnP.
