Jonathan, can you address these?

Jonathan, I moved this here because I was invading
somebody else's thread previously.

Prior to SP2 I was able to connect video and audio with
several friends using Windows Messenger, my linksys
router, my old non-configurable (to my knowledge) DSL
modem and Windows XP.

I am using the Linksys BEFW11S4 version 2.1. I believe I
have the most current Firmware version 1.45.10. There is
a UPnP setting, and it is turned on.

For some reason, I can no longer get audio or video with
Windows Messenger 5.1 (both friends using the same
version). I can get video but no audio with MSN 6.2 (both
using same version. I can get both audio and video on
Yahoo messenger but both are bad (chalked up to Yahoo not
connection:)

Do you have any idea whether the Linksys firmware 1.45.1
is truly UPnP as it says it is?

I have connected my PC directly into my DSL modem and had
my friend do the same and it still does not work.

I have turned off QoS on both computers and no difference.

I have turned off the Widows Firewall and no help. When
on, the firewall is configured to allow messenger through
however.

Should I turn off UPnP on the router and forward the
ports in your suggestion?

Odly my messenger worked so perfectly for nearly a year,
and now I can not connect with anybody. It seems odd that
with so many people having this problem, there aren't any
clear answers.

To sum up

Dell Latitude X300
WinXP SP2
Firewall on, but passing Win Messenger and MSN
QoS off
UPnp on Win XP On

Linksys BEFW11S4 version 2.1 firmware 1.45.10
UPnP On
PPoE DSL Connection

Windows Messenger version 5.1
MSN Messenger version 6.2

I would be grateful for any help you can offer.

Sincerely,
Greg P.

hope you don't mind me answering. even though i am not the Jonathan you
are seeking, my name is also Jonathan, and i was impressed with all the
alternatives you tried (e.g. change this, remove that, etc.). some
people try nothing on their own, before coming here to complain.

i have seen many people come here with this specific problem, but for
many other people it is not a problem, so maybe it is related to the
interaction between the hardware/drivers and SP2. why did it work fine
before SP2, i don't know, but here's something else to try, that might
narrow down / rule out some possibilities.

try using audio/video with 2 other programs built into Windows. run
NetMeeting (by typing conf in a Run box), and see if audio
and/or video will work. after that, run Dialer (by typing dialer
in a Run box), and see if audio and/or video will work. you will
have to know your friends' IP address to make the connection, because
there is no Contact List to double-click on to auto-connect.

how will this help ? if Dialer and NetMeeting also fail, then i would
think the problem is unrelated to SP2, and more related to the drivers
not getting along with SP2. if NetMeeting or Dialer work fine, then i
would think the problem is not related to drivers or hardware, but more
related to SP2 or the interaction between SP2 and Win/MSN Messenger.

if you try this, i sure would like to know what happens.
sorry this is not a magic bullet to solve everybody's problem.
i just hope it narrows down / rules out some possibilities.

Any Jonathan is fine with me, I just read that the other
Jonathan seems to know quite a bit, so I hope he'll chime
in.

To bring this into context there are four people in
different locations with different ISP's that I am
testing with. Three of us have DSL and routers (two
Linksys and one Belken) One of us has cable modem and no
router. Nearly all of these settings have been tried on
all four, but sometimes a test falls through the cracks.
I guess I wouldn't make a good scientist.

The big one for me is that neither messeneger will do
audio and video even when we bypass routers (which should
eliminate UPnP on the routers and NAT on the router. I
don't understand how NAT works on direct DSL, but I
thought I was getting a true IP address when I log
directly into the DSL modem.

Odly enough, as I say, we have been able to use Yahoo
msgr (very poor audio) even *through* the routers which
means the cameras, sound cards, and to some extent the
routers work correctly. I presume that Yahoo may use
different ports, but forwarding must be taking place for
those to work.

I have tried Net Meeting and it won't work either. I
don't think I tried all of the tests with it (UPnp, Qos,
Firewall, etc) but At one point the two of us were
plugged into the same router and Net Meeting wouldn't
work using local IP addresses.

It feels like the IP providers changed something?,
because previously I used the exact same router, with Win
Msg 5.0 and got flawless audio/video to the person with
the cable modem and one of the DSL sites (although only
when she plugged directly into the modem, bypassing the
Belken router which made me think that we didn't have
that one set up.)

Now as I say, none of us can connect with anything other
than Video on MSN Messenger 6.2 (very good video - even
through routers) and Yahoo.

Haven't tried Dialer yet. Didn't even know what that was?
Will look into it.

Still open to more sugestions.
