MS Fax viewer

B

Basilic

First I will explain my setup, then foloow up with my problem.

I use MS Fax to receive all incoming faxes, as I receive a lot of spam
faxes, to reduce wasted paper consumption. Most received faxes are
deleted from the fax console after they have been previewed. A few get
previewed then printed, most of them are between 2-5 pages long.

I have no problem at all with the fax console and the viewer.

However, when I go to print a fax, I get a window which allows me to
select which pages I'd like to print. This step is taking more and more
time, because the selection screen is loading over 1000 pages, all
previous received (not nessessarily printed out) faxes. Weird thing is
that it doesn't happen with every single fax only the majority. Some 2
page faxes show only those 2 pages.

All I want is to get rid of this cache. I don't need to see or print
garbage faxes from 2 years ago.

I've looked into the Inbox directory, there is a huge log (4+Mb) file
which I cannot modify or delete, could it be this file? If yes, how do
I get rid of it?

If not, what else can I do?

Thanks
Frankie

Thanks for pointing me to the FAQ, but it did not help in my case.

I looked thoughout the MSFax folder, and all folders are empty except
for ActivityLog and Common Coverpages folders. The latter is self
explainitory with only 4 files of 11Kb. The ActivityLog folder does
have an InboxLog.txt file which is 4.4Mb in size. I've tried to modify
and/or delete this file to no avail.

My problem is actually with the MS Picture and Fax Viewer. When I'm
viewing the actual received fax, all is good. When I click on the print
Icon in the viewer a "page selection" window pops up, showing all
received faxes in a preview window. It's when I'm in this window that I
see faxes from over 2 years ago. Of course the last received fax shows
up as the first item on this list, which will have a check mark beside
it, all the others won't be checked.

I've also searched my hard drive for all TIFF files, it found none.

This has to be the weirdest problem I've encountered, and I'm no slouch
when it comes to computers and XP. This is actually the first time I
ask for help in the last 20 years.

Sorry. That reply was intended for a different thread. It wouldn't help you
a bit. I agree. If your Inbox Folder is empty you've done all you can from
the Fax interface. The problem seems to reside with Windows Picture and Fax
Viewer which is a different application. Have you looked for any temp
directories that app might be referencing?

Can you actually print one of these very old files? I'm wondering if you're
seeing a thumbnail database of some kind somewhere (probably in a temp
folder, maybe temporary internet items) and maybe we should be looking for
something like this instead of a large number of .TIFs...

Yes, I can print them out.

No .TIFs on the hard drive, using XP search function.

I personally think that it may have to do with MS Pic&Fax viewer
caching the images in something like the "thunmb.db" or "index.dat"
file or even a temp folder somewhere.

Presently searching for all "thumb.db" files. Found nothing of
interest, biggest file is 500K associated to NASA World Wind program
(similar to Google Earth).

Also searched for "index.dat" files, biggest is associated with the
cookies folder.

Checked the C:\windows\prefetch, nothing of interest, all tiny files.

Can I delete all items found in C:\windows\temp? There are a few
numbered files ending with .fileset which are quite large around 1-2Mb,
one at 6+Mb and another at 8+Mb. If I could delete these without
consequences, at least it'll clear up some space on the HD, and maybe
solve my prob.

Are there other temp folders besides C:\windows\temp which I may be
omitting or not seeing in windows explorer?

I routinely delete files in any temp folder as part of my routine
maintenance.

You can, if you like, also delete all the thumbs.db files. They will
get regenerated the next time a file in the folder is viewed.
