There are several programs running when starting the computer. I tried
changing the start up options by unchecking the programs I recognized. But, I
get a meassage

"
An access is denied error was returned while attempting to change a service.
You may need to log on using the administrator account to make changes"

Is there any specific way this change has to be done? This is a stand alone
system and I am the only user.

Thanks
Krishna

It could be your firewall. Try turning it off, then see if you can gain
access to msconfig. If you can, you may consider using the Windows Firewall
instead, or configuring your firewall to allow access to msconfig, if
possible.

Try this :
Run MSConfig
Choose "Normal Startup" > Click OK
Reboot your computer.
Now try to make changes in msconfig

And unless you know what the Service does, don't muck with entries under
Services.

Do not use MSCONFIG to make changes to Services. Period. Ignore the
Service tab except for informational purposes.

You can make changes, temporary ones for diagnostic and testing
purposes, to the items in the Startup tab of MSCONFIG. However
permanent changes to the Startup items are best made by reconfiguring
or uninstalling the application program that put the item into the
Startup tab. See http://www.pacs-portal.co.uk/startup_content.php
for detailed information on specific startup items.

If you want to make changes to the services that are loaded, do so by
using Start - Run - SERVICES.MSC and then reconfiguring the specific
service that you want to change. However before making any changes
check out the services involved at
http://www.dead-eye.net/WinXP Services.htm

Good luck

Thanks, I just clicked normal startup and the message did not come up,
though it takes for ever to start up.
I have not done any changes in the sercices tab - only on the start up tab.

Now, you should be able to disable/enable startup items.
