MPG2 & Movie Maker 2.0

I don't know if this is the correct group to ask this question - if not,
please direct me to the right one. I asked this question in
microsoft.public.multimedia.windows.mediaplayer and have not received a
response.

I'm having codec problems with Movie Maker 2.0, TMPGEnc Plus 2.5. and
Windows Media Encoder 9.0. I've converted some VCR tapes into mpeg files.
The conversion software I used
came with the capture card (Creative Video Digital VCR). The files are
encoded into MPEG-2 files. I now want to edit these files with Movie Maker
or TMPGEnc, but cannot - I get the error codes that I don't have the correct
codecs installed. I have installed Nimo50Build8 and DivX Codec 5.02.

What codecs do I need and where can I find them? Or what freeware software
can I get to convert the MPEG-2 files into the proper format?

I'm running XP Pro, with Media Player 9.0 and DirectX 9.0

Thank-you!

I don't have a DVD on this particular machine that I'm doing the video
editing on. I'll wait until the prices come down on DvD burners.
I d/l the trial versions of WinDvD and PowerDvD - all I could do with these
were play the files - I couldn't save them into mpg format nor decode them.
I wasn't impressed.
After some research, I guess I'm left with Pinnacle's Studio version 8, but
I'm not willing to spend the $100 bucks.
Thanks for your great help.

Nice page - didn't help much. The links led to versions of WinDvD which I
tried. Thanks anyway.
