I have two large MPG video files that I want to merge into one, anyone
know of a program that will do this?

Agreed - that's what I'm using now. But I found -- in Win98 days --
that MPEGJoin was a little bit more convenient to use.
Camel was hit or miss on Win2K too. On one machine it worked, another
not. I never could figure out why. Maybe something to do with users
and permissions. Try uninstall, then re-install as administrator?

98SE here and I find FileMerger to be better than Camel.

But then I use a buyw*re app these days. :)

I've never really trusted Camel.

Just a caution with TMPGEnc.... it will definitely join MPEG files, but I
found that the audio goes seriously out of synchronization. So if you have
dialog, lips will be out of sync. There's a way to compensate. I went
strange trying to do it though, and just gave up and used other software for
the job.

If you have no dialog, no sweat.

Since recommending TMPEnc and Camel's MPG Join a couple of days ago I've
spent some time playing with both and getting pretty hacked off. As I said
to Joe Bloggs I had not used Camel's MPG Joiner before, but have seen it
recommended here many times before. It doesn't do much on WinXP SP2, just
locks up. TMPEnc on the other hand I have used before, and have found it to
be a useful tool. I hadn't used it for joining MPGs before but I knew it
was an option. I now know that it has some pretty serious issues with the
audio sync. Buggered if I can get it to work properly, I give up. ;)

Any ideas on how to get MPEGJoin to work under Windows XP SP2? It
seems to work OK until the "Joining Files" screen appears at which it
stops and does nothing. I've tried compatibility mode without
success.

No, sorry. This is what happens when I recommend a program that I haven't
used. I also have WinXP SP2 and I have the exact same results as you. :(
