MPEGs playing too fast

I have a problem with almost all audio & video files on all players
(Windows Media, Quicktime, Real etc). Files play TOO fast! Either both
video and soundtrack are too fast, or video is OK, but soundtrack runs in
rapid bursts. I have searched the web for this, and can't find any
solution. There is a solution suggested in Windows Media Player, but it
directs me to an option that is only available if running XP - I'm on
Windows 2000.

Has this happened to anyone else, and do you have any suggestions?

I'd grab a copy of the Kaaza Lite Codec pack from some mirror. This should
take care of the issue for you.

Seriously, you should include some context so that the rest of can
gain the benefit from the sage advice that someone gave you.
