I have an MPEG 2 file which plays on my desktop in WMP, Server 2003 but
does not play on the target hardware under either XPPro or XPe using
WMP. It does play in VLC. Any suggestions of how I go about working out
what the hell is missing would be appreciated.

Do you have DVD playback software on your desktop?

Why would I have DVD playback software on a development box?

WMP can play a file only if it finds the appropriate DirectShow Filters
(= codecs) installed. Neither XP nor W2K include a codec to play
MPEG-2. If the MPEG-2 file plays on your development box, the codec must
have been brought there, typically with DVD playback software.

Therefore I would have asked the very same question that Mike asked. The
codec didn't get there by itself. If you can't figure out what codec
plays your file, you can use the GraphEdit tool that comes with the
DirectShow SDK files.

That is more the sort of information I was after. Where would I find
GraphEdit?

Heidi,

Graphedit comes as part of the DirextX SDK which is a large download.

I'm not sure about the current situation. The DirectShow stuff used to
be in the DirectX SDK, but I think it's been moved to the Platform SDK.
