MP3s - Some play - Some Don't

I have created plenty of presentations with music in the background so I know
all the basics of audio insertion. Here is the situation...

Using PPT 2002
Using files that I ripped from CDs using RealPlayer.
I am inserting the file through Insert>Movies and Sound>Sound from File
My recently ripped files play within PPT but do not produce sound.
I see evidence that they are playing through the timeline in the custom
animation function.
I can successfully play and insert files into PPT that I ripped a few months
back using RP (but not the recent ones)
The recently ripped ones make no sound when they play in PPT but will play
in both RP and WMP
In my first effort, I ripped using RP to create MP3s
My second effort used WMP to create MP3, WMA and WAV
All produced the same effect - they insert OK and show movement on the
animation timeline but produce no sound
I CAN play these files successfully using Start>Run>mplay32.exe

There is no doubt that using RP has thrown some settings out of whack.
I saw on SoniaColeman's website instructions about the win.ini.
Checking the win.ini file begins to push my level of confidence.
Wouldn't the win.ini settings effect all the items played back instead
of my situation where it is just the recently ripped ones?
I am wondering if the problem are the settings of the way that I am ripping
the music file?

Any Ideas - Thanks

What version of Windows are you running? If it is Win 2000 or XP you should be
comparing the Registry settings, not the Win.ini and System.ini files discussed
at http://www.soniacoleman.com/Tutorials/PowerPoint/multimedia.htm

If your files play in mplay32.exe and not in PowerPoint when in slide show mode,
my guess is that the path length is too long. Where have you stored your MP3s?
Are they in My Documents? That might make the path very long. Try moving
everything to C:\Test and delete and reinsert the music files. Then play the
slide show. Does the music play?

Sonia,
Thanks - Here is what happened...
1. I am running XP, so I followed your directions on the changes to the
Registry settings. Everything was correct, but it was missing two strings -
Result: Problem still existed

2. I moved the files to a test folder on the C drive. Result: The played
just fine. So the problem was the path was too long.

Thanks for solving my problem!!
