mp3 files not playing in ppt files

have created plenty of presentations with music in the background so I know
all the basics of audio insertion. Here is the situation...

Using PPT 2003.
I am inserting the mp3file through Insert>Movies and Sound>Sound from File
I can successfully play and insert files into PPT that I ripped a few months
back using mp3 (but not the recent ones)
My earlier presentations which are having mp3 insertions are also not
playing audio now, but these were running fine earlier.

My recent presentations do not play mp3 inseted audio files. While double
clicked on sound icon the error MCI appear

Any Ideas - Thanks

First try putting the mp3 in a folder with the presentation and reinserting -
any good if so - path length too long

Then, have you installed any music / video editor that may have screwed up
settings

Do the mp3s play in mplay32 (from start > run >mplay32.exe?)

Lastly try embedded files see here:

Couple of thoughts. You have installed software that changed your system
settings/associations/codecs, or the new files you ripped from CD have DRM
protection and can not be used in PPT.
