i thought that since the zune player would not zync with my computer , I
would just buy a samsung and all my troubles would go away . WRONG .

when my daughter connect her samsung mp3 to my computer a ballon tells us
found new hardware - mtp device . then the ballon will minamize and come
back ,again and again . the player seems to be in a startup loop .
I have tried different connection points , unpluging the printer and
restarts . nothing helps .

please help . my 15 year old is going to explode if she cannot listen to
her taylor swift .

Did you get a software CD with Samsung. And a manual?

Just curious! Some people skip that step, and you did not mention it.

MTP is explained here. Either the Samsung software will help, or if
there is no software CD, you can get some ideas as to what to install,
here.

I'm sorry . yes a cd came with and was installed . the samsung software
does not reconize the player . it will not "sync" . the zune does the same
thing . and I have spent hours on the phone with a zune rep trying to get
that to sync also but still no . I have connected a new camera with no
problems but when it comes to mp3's , no dice . all software has been
installed .

The Wikipedia article mentions that Windows Media Player 10, adds the
capability to interface to MTP devices. This page on the Microsoft site,
indicates there is now a version 11. I don't want to screw up your
computer, or whatever version of Windows Media Player you are currently using,
but you could try upgrading. Some people keep older versions of that
software, for various hacks that are available. (The version on my
computer is ancient, and is 6.4. I seldom use it, and have no interest
in changing it.)

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/player/versions.aspx

There is a little blurb here on the subject. This article mentions
that if you have Windows Media Player 10 or later, when an MTP
device is plugged into the computer, you can "sync" to it.

I hope that helps,

Perhaps DRM, or Digital Rights Management?

What exactly happens when the media player is connected ?

Does WMP11 show an error dialog ?

Did you check Event Viewer (Administrative Tools control panel),
for any error messages ?

The more description and details (like the exact text from the
error messages), the easier it is to figure out.

I'm not even sure at this point, what tools work with MTP,
for debugging purposes.

OK, I found this mentioned in the KB. It says there should be
a new process running in Task Manager (press control-alt-delete
to see what processes are running in WinXP), after Windows
Media Player is installed.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/892552

"After you install Microsoft Windows Media Player 10, a new
process appears in Windows Task Manager. This process is
named the Windows User Mode Driver Framework service
(Wdfmgr.exe). The Startup type setting for this process
is Automatic."

Depending on what antivirus or other tools you might be running,
perhaps something prevented this from happening. Have a look
in Device Manager for "Wdfmgr.exe".

You might also want to check the player itself. If it has
on-screen controls of some sort, it might offer options
to run in an MTP mode, a USB Mass Storage mode (Mass Storage Class),
or something else. Check that it is in the mode you want
to use. If syncing, that would be MTP. If doing simple
file copy, then Mass Storage Class. This Wikipedia article,
claims the objective of some of the players, is to only
support MTP.

Another remote possibility. I had a look at the original post
again. How is the device powered ?

Is it running off its own internal battery, when you
connect it to a USB port ? Is it actually powering
itself from the USB port ? Could it be overloading
the 500mA limit on ports right on the computer ?
Are you connecting it to an external hub, or
directly to a port on the back of the computer ?
Perhaps the restart loop is related to the USB
port switching off due to overload.

which port the mp3 player is connected to was a big issue with the zune
people .
so i have tried all the different connections possible . a hub connection ,
directly into a usb from the desktop , new cables , different cables ,
extension cables ,cable trays , cable tv .

i think you might be on to somethimg though with the media player protocol
though . reading the mtp article , i see that samsung is a partner or
something . i think the mtp road is where the problem lies .

Did you see my other post, asking about "Wdfmgr.exe" in Task Manager ?

That should be running, for sync to work. It is part of the Windows
Media Player install. Perhaps Samsung uses something similar in their
software install.

Perhaps you could post in microsoft.public.windowsmedia.player and
see if someone like zachd is around.

http://zachd.com/pss/pss.html

I found the suggestion for that particular web page, here.
http://discuss.extremetech.com/forums/thread/1004376127.aspx

This article appears in another group, microsoft.public.multimedia.windows.mediaplayer
This particular thread is for a case where the WMP install won't work, and is a
workaround via a manual install.

http://www.microsoft.com/communitie...crosoft.public.multimedia.windows.mediaplayer
&tid=76ff6fa2-4bf4-4510-8dc5-73de3b1204eb&cat=en_us_58510b05-dd10-4f1f-944c-7446df588cb9&lang=en&cr=us&sloc=&p=1

My suspicion would be, that the missing wdfmgr is somehow important.
It is a driver framework, and the info I could dig up, suggested it
was related to MTP. The player may have its own software, and I don't know
if all players would rely on the Microsoft wdfmgr or would bodge
together their own framework.

I love the irony, that marketing terms like "Plays for Sure" are
associated with software like this :-/

In addition to zachd's site:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/player/11/readme.aspx
http://support.microsoft.com/gp/tshoot_wmp11_more
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/devices/howto.mspx

Try this newsgroup:
microsoft.public.windowsmedia.player
(when posting give OS, SP, browser, player version, error code, etc)

To find what is installed for WMP:
Click > help > about > technical information
HTML file will be produced.

Add remove programs for wmp 11 should have:
Windows Media Player 11
Windows Media Format 11 runtime
Microsoft User-Mode Driver Framework.
