I am using Windows Media player v. 9.0 on XP Home.

Whenever I try to copy music files, in MP# format, to a
CD-R, I get a message that "there are no items on the CD
ordevice."

Of course not! I am trying to record them thereto.

so, how can I record MP3's onto CD?

Many thanks.
kcg

That sounds more like you are trying to copy *from* a CD. If you just wish
to record MP3's onto a CD you want to burn a Data CD. This can be done in
WMP, but using Windows Explorer is sometimes a bit better.

sorry for not making myself clear: i meant that i ws
trying to copy A PLAYLIST of MP3s ont a CD as a Data CD...
and it will not allow me to do it.

kcg

Just use Windows Explorer, if WMP doesn't work out. There isn't much you
can do to troubleshoot the burner at this point.

chris is right about WE, but if you can play them on 9,
and you can burn other music that way, whatever the
filetype should burn on a cd. not sure what your doing,
or what happens when you try to burn??

thank you all for your kind responses. here's how my
problem shakes out
1. i have a playlist
2. the playlist contains 130 music files [all or almost
all are MP3s.
3. total size of the files in the playlist is 423 MB.
4. my CD-RW drive is drive E, and i have it set as "Data
CD".
5. I have a blank CD-R 700 MB in drive E.
6. ALL of the 130 music files in the playlist have a
check-mark beside their titles [flagged for copying].
7. on the right side of the screen, there is a
message "There are no items on the CD or device" [that is
what i would expect, since this is my target disk and it
is blank.
8. at the bottom of the right-hand side of the screen is
a message indicator "702.82 MB freespace" [OK so far]
9. when I hit the red "copy" button [ top right] the
screen blinks for one half of a second, during which the
right-hand window BRIEFLY flashes the message "Cop[y in
progress", and then IMMEDIATELY returns to display "There
are no items on the CD or device."
10. and that's the end of my copying run.

I hope this is helpful. does it clarify my situation?

thankls again.
kcg

But why didn't you try it in Explorer?

No, but since you are trying to troubleshoot the burning it's a good thing
to try. If it's doesn't work their either you narrow down your problem
more. I would stop wasting your time and just use an app like Nero or Easy
CD Creator. XP's burner sucks. :|

I had this problem myself...right below the copy button on the top right of the "blank cd" side of the layout is an I icon (for drive info / properties). Check the box to allow recording, and make sure everything else makes sense.

That fixed my problem.
