MP3 i-pod connectivity to PC-not registering

I have just brought a new Apple i-pod and have connected the player to my Packard Bell PC via the 6-pin FireWire port (I believe this is correct, as above the port it has the numbers 1394, which I think means the appropriate port I need). It fits in OK, but there appears to be no connectivity between the PC and i-pod (since no transfers start or in the i-tunes programme, there is no mention of me having an i-pod connected). Is there anyway I can check to see if this port is in fact working/live, or should I get a USB adaptor so I can fit my IEEE1394 connector into a normal USB port? Thank you.
