connecting my PC to my home stereo - need help

I have a Dell XPS 200 (Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005) and am trying to
connect it my home stereo so I can listen to my music through my stereo
instead of the PC speakers. I used a Monster Cable 1/8" to RCA L/R
(Y-adapter) to connect from PC to CD input on my receiver. The problem is
that when I do this it causes my speakers to make a humming noise. To check
if there was a problem with the Y-adapter or my stereo, I connected an i-pod
using the same adapter and it worked fine with no humming noise. I also did
this with a boom box. Dell's tech support was of no help. Any ideas as to
what I did wrong?

the hum your getting sounds like a 50hz hum that means earth is not very good
on the sound card also try connecting the pc to the aux/in on your amp that
will take a higher input level and compensate for the the high milli amps
input or try a mixer first the into the amp regards will.
