mp3 codec

HELP!!!!!!! in trying to install, and then deleting an
updated codec pack, i somehow lost the codec that enables
me to play mp3s

Don't use any type of Codec Pack. As you are now finding out they cause

Download and install from here :

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/format/codecdownload.aspx

I have done this with no problems. If you've already done this, simply
re-install over. Or roll back using system restore to a date before you
'lost' your codec.
