Windows Media Player 9 not reading mp3s

I cannot get the WMA to play my mp3s it's saying"The
audio codec identified by the format tag 55 is required
to play this file. To determine if this codec is
available to download from the Web, click Web Help". I've
looked all over for the right codec i can't find it can
someone help me?

In C:\Windows\System32 do you see "l3codecA.acm" (Note the A) and/or
"l3codecP.acm" (Note the P) or neither?
