I have been trying to configure Thunderbird to read newsgroups from x-privat
but it appears that Thunderbird does not have a place to enter the password
required by x-privat. Am I wrong?

Thanks in advance.

Yep. :) You need to check the box in Server Settings (in Account
Settings) called "Always request authentication when connecting to this
server". Then when you go to subscribe to the groups, a box should pop
up asking you for the username. After you submit, another box will ask
for the password. It's easiest to choose to save the username and
password (check box), but that's your choice.

I'm not sure I understand what you're asking or saying re: 'x-privat', but
if that means munged, well, this is from M-TBird.

The "newgate.x-privat.org" server is no longer free (it is faster),
however, they still offer "news.x-privat.org" for free. It's not always
the most stable, but it gets the job done for what I want.

Yes you are wrong.

X-privat has two newsservers "newgate.x-privat.org" and "news.x-
privat.org" The first (newsgate), will inncur a one-off fee of 6 euros,
the latter will remain a free service.

Is it still freeeee????
Hope I am on the free track....

Yes, it is, if you're connecting through the news.x-privat.org server.
If you've got X-News configured to connect to the newsGATE server, just
change it. Your username and password should still work.
