Moving to XP Pro from Home

Ramesh

HI

I use a XP Home OEM now and need to move to XP Pro. Since OEM is stuck to
the system, I need to now move to another system, so I dont lose the Home
licence.

Is there a way I can migrate the installation smoothly to Pro without having
to reinstall from scratch (all applications etc) and also retain the Home
licence on the old system?

Thanks
Ramesh

1. Purchase the conventional "Retail Upgrade Version" of Windows XP Pro.
2. Uninstall any third-party antivirus or firewall programs.
3. Disconnect all peripheral hardware devices, but not the monitor, keyboard or mouse.
4. While at your XP Home desktop screen, insert the XP Pro CD in the CD drive.
5. Select the default "Upgrade" option.... DO NOT SELECT "New Installation".
6. Defrag your drive after upgrading.
7. Reinstall your antivirus program & turn-on the firewall.
8. Visit the Windows Update website and download the necessary updates.

Once you upgrade XP Home to XP Pro (using the upgrade version of XP Pro),
the XP Home license becomes part of the XP Pro license to make one whole
license. Therefore, you cannot use the XP Home license again.

Ramesh,

To do what you want to do, you do indeed need to build/buy a new system. You
can migrate all your data files by network, copy to CD or other removable
media, etc. However there is no way out of re-installation of all your
programs. [Legally you need to remove them first from the "old" system,
assuming they aren't OEM also or get additional licenses for each
application to use on a second system.]
