Moving the mouse only results in the highlighted area increasing.

Occasionally in Excel all functions stop working, except that when I move the
mouse it expands or contracts the highlighted area. Clicking on the mouse
has no effect, and the Alt keys don't work. Excel is more or less frozen
except for this "scrolling" activity. The only way out seems to be to crash
Excel, losing the current work. Other programs continue to work OK. (I have
a Toshiba Tecra.)

I'm having the exact same behavior. On several different machines in my workplace. Haven't found a 100% reproducable case yet. This is becoming a problem because people are starting to loose work.

If anybody has any recomendation for this problem, please post or send email

No solution, alas. But what puzzles me is that on my family PC this occurs
only in my wife's account, in my account there is no problem at all. So it
appears it doesn't have to do with the hardware.

I have had the same frustrating problem for over a year now. There is no
pattern and I haven't been able to figure out how to get around rebooting.
However, there is a post several posts below this one, dated 2/13/2005,
titled 'Excel XP locks up when I highlight a range' that appears to describe
the same problem. Someone has posted what appears to be a possible solution.
I am going to try it.
