Excel XP locks up when I highlight a range, suggestions?

I am more and more often having Excel XP crash when I highlight a range, for
instance, when I want to bold a set of data, etc. The application locks up
and the mouse won't release...the highlighted area keeps moving around even
though I've released the mouse button. There is also a little document icon
that appears if I move the mouse outside of the spreadsheet are (onto the
menu bar for instance). I've done all the updates for Office and Windows and
also checked the MS help site. I usually can remedy the problem by rebooting
but sometimes this won't work. This happens on multiple files...and yet the
files will work fine after a reboot or the next day for instance. Any
suggestions?

The application locks up

This may be related to a mouse driver incompatibility, especially wheel mouses
sometimes show this. Try a different (newer or older) mouse driver.
