excel unresponsive

when I open a worksheet new or existing, I click on a cell. It won't allow
me to enter any data, and when I move the mouse it highlights all the cells
the mouse comes in contact with. There is no control over the worksheet, it
just scrolls rapidly. Any suggestions

If using a scroll mouse, then slap the mouse wheel quite hard a couple of times
