Moving outlook files

I have had to install a larger hard drive on my computer and need to transfer
my office professional 2003 programs, including Outlook and all its mail
folders, to the new drive (on the same computer). I am planning to uninstall
Offfice and then re-install it on the new drive, but I don't want to lose all
my Outlook mail folders and saved e-mails. Where do I find those files so I
can just move them with Microsoft Explor, or My Computer. At the outlet where
the new drive was installed, they told me that it was not possible to "ghost"
from the old drive to the new drive (they tried it and it didn't work
properly).

Your Outlook *.pst file are stored in your profile folder. If your operating
system is Windows 2000 or XP navigate to C:\Documents and Settings\*user
name*\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook. Copy all the .pst
files in this folder and then paste them to the same location on the new
drive.

Thanks for your assistance. I don't have those sudirectories on my computer
and when I do a search for *.pst documents, none are found. I'm using XP and
Microsoft Office Professional 2003.

Okay, we'll try it this way. Open Outlook on your old drive. From the file
menu choose 'Import and Export'. On the first wizard screen choose 'Export to
a file' and click 'next'. From the 'Create a file of type:' menu choose
'Personal Folder File (.pst)' and click 'next'. From the 'Select folder to
export from:' list find and click 'Personal Folders'. Make sure to check mark
the box to include subfolders and click 'next'. On the 'Save exported file
as:' screen I would suggest choosing 'Browse' and save the backup.pst file
either in your My Documents folder or on your desktop and click 'finish'.

After you have installed Office on your new drive open Outlook and again
choose 'Import and Export' from the file menu. This time choose 'Import from
another program or file' and click 'next'. On the 'Select file type to
import from:' screen find and click 'Personal Folder File (.pst)' and click
'next'. On the 'File to import' screen' browse to the location on your old
drive that contains the backup.pst file and double click the file and click
'next'. On the 'Select the folder to import from' screen select ' Personal
Folders'. Make sure 'Include subfolders' is selected and that 'Import items
into the same folder in:' is also selected and that 'Personal Folders' is
showing in the drop down box. Click finish.

Bad advice, as this will likely cause mail profile corruption.

You have to search to include hidden files/folders.
When copying pst do *not* overwrite any existing pst

Brian,

I'm a newbie trying to transfer OUtlook also. Can you explain why John's
advice would corrupt files?

If a particular PST is defined in a mail profile (i.e., so that it is known
to Outlook when it is open), overwriting that PST with another will almost
always corrupt the mail profile so that it will either lose track of the PST
it knows or add an identical PST to the folder list so that all folders are
listed twice. The only cure is a new profile.

Did anyone come up with a better way? I am trying to copy my Outlook
addressbook and files from a computer running 98 Outlook 2000 to a new
computer running XP and Office 2003. How should I do that?
