Moving messages to system folders

In versions of Outlook PRIOR to 2003 it was possible to setup shortcuts to
system folders...for example My Documents. After that shortcut was setup a
message could be dragged to that icon and the message would be copied to My
Documents.

I have 2 questions with this in mind:
1. If the subject is the same as another file in My Documents the first
message is overwritten and replaced with the more recent.
ex. Message 1 with subject line "Test" is replace by message 2 with
subject line "Test"

2. How does someone drag a message to a system folder in Outlook 2003?
I have had limited success with resizing the windows and dragging directly
out of Outlook to My Documents.

Please advise.

1) i thought the file system added a (x) to the file name, although it's
been years since i did it....

2) you'll need to practice dragging to my documents - that's the only way to
do it now.

Diane,
I have done this and seen it add some form of incremental letter or number.
Other times like when I just tried it...it wants to replace a message with
the new one.
Is there some setting that needs changing? I seem to be missing something.

Hi David,

Actually this is a normal file system behavior and we can reproduce it.

Scenario 1:

Move a large message to the "My Document" shortcut, for example 5MB, then
it may take 5-10 seconds delay. During that time, move the same message to
that folder, then we have two parallel file copying processes. In this
scenario, the filename will be ABC.msg and ABC[1] .msg

Scenario 2:

Save two messages with the same subject in the Draft folder, for example,
ABC. The message subject will be the filename if you move it to disk. Stick
on CTRL key to select the two message at one time, and then move them to
the shortcut. You will get ABC and ABC[1].

Scenario 3:

In Scenario 2, move 1 of the ABCs to shortcut, and then the other. Now you
will get a file overwriting confirm dialog.

Hope the info helps. If anything is unclear, please feel free to let me
know.

Thank you. That does help to at least understand what is going on.

NOW...is there a way if one message comes in today...and another 2 days from
now with the same subject line to NOT overwrite the 1st message? The only
way they have currently of ensuring items do not get overwritten is to
MANUALLY change the file name after it is saved to the desired folder.
This is HIGHLY common in this department and is a CRITICAL factor in keeping
an information trail for VERY complex construction projects.

Hi David,

Please let me know the version number (including the serivce pack number)
of Outlook, as well as that of Windows. So I can test it on my local
machine and even consult our product team. Meanwhile, I recommend pack
Windows and Offices with the latest updates and then check the issue again.

http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/

http://www.officeupdate.com/ProductUpdates/default.aspx

Does this behavior occur on all machines or just a particular one?
