Hi there, i currently work from a laptop, i want to buy a desktop
machine to replace the laptop which is showing its age and isnt that
powerful. Is there a way for me to move the licence for the OS from my
old laptop, to my new pc? as i can save £££ if i dont have to buy a
second copy of windows xp. i realise that my laptop will be unlicenced
from that point, but as its going to be sat in my attic for years to
come im not that bothered about it and doubt it will ever be used
again.

thanks

If XP came pre-installed on the Lap Top, no. If you received an XP CD
and it's retail, legally yes. If a generic OEM and it's been over 120
days since you reinstalled it, you're not supposed to move it but,
technically, you can and it will activate on line.

If it's a retail license, then yes as long as it's removed from the old
system or the old one trashed. If it's OEM then no. By the EULA it's tied
to the laptop.

Mark the EULA stands for End User License Agreement. It is what you the user
of the the software agree to before you install the software. In the case of
Windows XP the ELUA must be agreed to before you can install the operating
system. If you didn't install the operating system yourself you can locate
eula.txt here C:\WINDOWS\system32 .

The EULA differs from version type to version type. A Retail version of XP
(full or upgrade) will allow you to transfer the operating system from
computer to computer or even sell the software license providing you
completely remove it from any other system it was on. However OEM versions
(Original Equipment Manufacturer) are forever tied to the first computer the
software is installed on. Hence you can not install it on another system
even if you remove it from the first.
