Genuine XP Licence Issue

I have a PC that genuine XP licence (is is should on the MS badge on the
tower). Because I had to reformat the C drive I could only reinstall from a
restore CD from another PC (because I did not have the source CD nor a
restore partition. I now have the situation that the PC boots up as 'not
genuine'

Presumably to be legal I need to 'tell' the PC the licence number from the
MS badge and I suppose that to do this I have to make some registry entries.

Please would you advise me what I should?

Many thanks

Julian

Was the restore CD hat you used from another computer the exact same version and the
same OEM as was yours that was originally installed ? Obviously not since you are
getting that message

The CD you used from the other PC is most likely
the cause of the problem. Call the PC manufacture
and tell them your PC did not come with an XP restore
CD and see if they still have and can send you a CD.

Make sure you tell them which product XP Home,
XP Professional or XP Media Center that was installed
on the PC before the hard drive problem occurred. They
may ask you for additional information so make the call
when you are next to the computer.

If the OS did not come included with the hardware on either install
discs or in a hidden partition then all you got with that computer was
the hardware. The software was not included. I'm guessing you bought a
used computer which did NOT include Windows or any other software but
instead included a polluted hard drive. Go back to the seller that
claimed Windows was included and demand they send you a legitimate
install CD and product key for Windows.

The product key doesn't entitle you to the license. If it was an OEM
license then the software is required to accompany the computer on which
it was installed. You obviously didn't get the software. If it was a
retail version of Windows, the prior owner may have decided to keep the
OS and its license to use on his next computer - and lied to you that
Windows was included with the hardware, or sold just the hardware but
didn't remove the sticker.

Talk to whomever sold you the computer as to why the software was not
included.
