Movies in Powerpoint won't play through LCD

I purchased an Adaptec and successfully transferred some
video from Hi-8 tapes to my laptop and then inserted into
a Powerpoint presentation. When I clicked on it, it played
on my laptop screen, but the people in the audience
looking at the projected image (through LCD projector) saw
only a blank hole where the movie should be -- next month
I will be teaching several hundred people at a conference
and MUST figure out what I am doing wrong...why could I
see/hear the movie on my laptop, but not through the LCD??
Help please...I am not very sophisticated with my computer
knowledge and was so excited that I was able to capture
and insert the movies....hmmm!
