Movie makers-finish movie+save movie as freezes 60% before finishe

I have a slide show and also a VHS movie that I cannot save as finished movie.
I want to burn these to DVD that can be watched on TV but cannot get further
than this.
If I try to burn the saved "project" instead of the finished movie, I get a
message from burning software 'unexpected format.
I have tried various software to burn but no sucess [incl.nere express6]
I cannot figure out why I cant save the finished movie or what I'm doing
wrong?
I am reluctant to load a whole Video on to my hard drive in case I cannot
burn it off.
I'm hoping that I can use windows movie maker for my task because I really
like the editing capabilities of it and I am now familiar with it all.
Can you please help. Cheers thanks Lee.

The project file (MSWMM) is not a video file and hence is not recognized as
such by any DVD Authoring program. This file is only used by Movie Maker to
store project information.
As to the problem with saving a movie we need more information before being
able to help you such as:
What happens when you try to save a movie?
What filetypes (extensions) are in the project?
Hoe long is it?
Are you using a lot of transitions?
What settings are you using when you try to save the movie?
Are you using either the "Save to my computer" option, or clicking File ->
Save movie file, or hitting CTRL+P to save your movie?
The only other thing I can do is point you to Papajohn's website see the
'Can't save a movie' section.

When i save the movie, it displays the download diagram. This moves about to 60% complete after about 10mins and stops. I then get programme closing dialogue, only option is CTRL_ALT_DEL.
The filetypes are wma or wmv and its about 14mins long.
There is about 80 photos with transitions in between and music to fit.
I have been using the 'save movie wizard' have tried 'best fit for CD and
'other settings' including video for PAL.
I also tried 'save to my computer' with the save movie wizard.
All these options freeze in the manner previously mentioned, so I never get
past about 60%.
Undersandably the {MSWMM] failed- tried in frustration I guess!
I would really like to share this with family members to watch as DVD's on
their TV.
Thanks for your ideas, hope this helps. L

Forgot to mention. I also want to do a video[home movie] but am reluctant to load it to my hard drive with this problem.
Capturing from my VCR is no problem, its just the rest. L

I am now thinking about two different possibilities here.

One is that your hard drive is formatted FAT32 instead of NTSC meaning you
are limited to a 4GB filesize. Even when saving directly to CD the movie is
rendered on your hard drive before transferring to the CD so the filesize
limit is still in affect. In "My Computer" right click the drive and select
properties to see if the File System is FAT32 or NTFS. If Fat32 see the
website below for information about converting:
http://www.aumha.org/win5/a/ntfscvt.htm

The other is that with all those transitions the project is too complex for
your system resources. If the drive isn't FAT32 then go to my website
(Video Editing -> Movie Maker -> [How-To] "Split up a Project due to
complexity issues")
