Movie Maker has encountered a problem! Please help!

S

Sarah

When I click the Icon for windows Movie Maker in XP Pro. It opens followed
by the following error,

"Windows Movie Maker has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are
sorry for the inconvenience".

Error signature,

AppName: moviemk.exe
AppVer: 2.0.3312.0
ModName: qedit.dll
ModVer: 6.5.1.900
Offset: 00018c80

When I click on the "send error report", it sends the error and it
automatically shuts down.

I can send the error text file that is sent to Microsoft if you need me to!
It is about 22 KB in size.

I have Windows XP Media Center edition and 3.00 GHz P4 and 1 GB of RAM.

Please help, I really need to use it ASAP. Thanks in advance!

Has it ever worked properly?
If so can you use system restore to go back?
Have you installed any apps or codecs that may be interfereing?
Look at www.papajohn.org problem solving > acceleration and codecs and/or
www.the-kellys.org and look for the rename codec app.

Hello there,

Try the following out...it has proved to be a successful procedure for a
variety of problems and users.

1) Download the full version of DirectX Ver 9.0b, Media Player 9 and Movie
Maker 2.

2) Reboot you computer and Install DirectX

3) Reboot again and install Windows Media Player 9

4) Reboot yet again and install Movie Maker 2

5) Reboot one more time

Yes it sounds very tedious, but if you want to be certain all file locks are
removed so that the correct files can be installed this is the way you have to
go.

It is very important that you only download the full versions of these programs
and that you DO NOT attempt an install over the internet.

Yes it did!

System restore did not fix the problem. I looked at the 2 web sites you
supplied and tried few things but nothing seems to work! Thanks.

Thanks John, I followed your instructions but I still have the same problem.
Thanks again!

Sarah,

Try moving your collection database out of the picture... as part of MM2's
startup it checks the database and the associated clips/files. Move it
someplace else and MM2 will startup, creating a new empty one.

Maybe a corruption in the database file is causing it.... see the Managing >
Collections page of my site if you need help locating the database file.

PapaJohn, thanks for your help! I did that but still, same problem! Is there
a way to uninstall it completely off my computer and start fresh? Thanks
again!

Hello there,

OK. Try this out...

1) Delete the icon on your desktop
2) Run Windows Explorer and navigate to C:\Program Files\Movie Maker
3) Reduce the size of Windows Explorer so that you can see both the
desktop and the program moviemk.exe
4) Right Click and drag the program moviemk.exe to your desk top, then
release the mouse button
5) The dialog will now ask what you want to do. Select the Create
Shortcut option
6) If you want you can later right click the icon and change its name so
that the ".exe" is removed

Good Luck :)

Best Wishes.....John Kelly

Hello there,

If you repeat those steps but instead of dragging the program to the desktop
you right click the program and look at Proprties and version, what does it say
exactly?

S

Sarah

Here it is John!

File version: 2.0.3312.0
Description: Windows Movie Maker
Copyright: Copyright (C) Microsoft Corp, 2002

Thanks for trying! I really appreciate it!

S

Sarah

Not really!

The last time it worked was when I was transferring video from My Sony DV
camera, the MM program locked up and I had to use the task manager to shut
it off. It has not worked since!

Hello there,

Yes,, I think I lost the plot some where!!

Microsoft will tell you no more than we have. As the re-instalation has failed
there is now just one thing to do....Reinstall Wondows XP, which will mean you
must save anything important to either a second hard drive or CD etc. or loose
it as a re-install will wipe everything currently on your C drive.

Have we suggested using windows repair, save me looking through all the
thread again. May be worth it first just in case. If not I'd run with John's
re-install XP.
