===================================
The Vista Movie Maker .mswmm project files
are not compatible with WinXP Movie Maker.

If you publish the Vista Movie Maker movie in
a movie format...wmv or .avi...you can import
it into WinXP Movie Maker but it will be just a
movie clip it won't include the individual source
files.

Yes...that's what it means...you cannot edit
a Vista Movie Maker .mswmm project file in
WinXP Movie Maker.

You can take the WinXP version to Vista
but not the reverse.

There is no XP version that runs on Vista.
