Movie Maker Codecs

Guest

Help ~ I am attempting to import a .mpg file into Windows XP Movie Maker 5.1
but keep getting the message that it cannot be imported because the codec
required to play the file is not installed on the computer.

I have the option to automatically download codecs checked and I have GSpot
on my computer.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

If it's asking for an MPEG codec, then it would appear to be an MPEG2 codec
which is the same as DVD decoding software. Movie Maker is very picky about
MPEG files... and it's better to use a third party editor for them if you
must edit MPEGs.

It could be an mpeg2 file, in which case MS doesn't have a free CODEC to
download. Usually you would get a 3rd party mpeg2 CODEC via DVD player
software. If it were mpeg1 that should be installed with Windows by default,
IINM.

Similarly you won't get DivX, Xvid, 3ivx or any number of other 3rd party
CODECs through MS automatic download.
