Move Published Site to New Laptop

I just loaded FP 2003 onto my laptop and am trying to remember how to get my
established site from the internet to the laptop. I did this several years
ago when I got a new PC but I can't remember how to do it. Both PC and
laptop have FrontPage 2003 and Windows XP Pro. I think I remember that if I
just copy the files from the PC to the laptop, everything will be
disorganized and messed up so I think I need to publish it from the web to
the PC. Not really sure. I only have the FP software on the laptop,
absolutely no files from my website.

My goal is to get my website on my laptop, then load my new Expression Web
software and "learn" Expression Web before publishing online.

Thanks for any help anyone can provide!

Create a folder for the web site on your Laptop

In FrontPage Create an empty website (File->New... select More Web
site templates from the task pane, then select Empty web, type in or
browse to the folder you just created for the site)

Change to remote site view.

In Publishing Properties type in the URL for your internet site and log
in

The left column will be blank, and the right column should populate with
the files and folders from the remote site.

Select Remote to Local just above the Publish web site button, and
Publish

I forgot to add that I publish through FTP. Can I still publish from the web
to my laptop? Nothing seems to be happening.

Okay, it worked! Thank you very much. I really appreciate your help, your
instructions were very complete as to what to do.

I'll go check it out and see how it looks offline now that I have my website
on my laptop and hopefully I'll be on to the next step of my project.

Thanks so much for your help.

Well, it looked good until I tried to open it in FP. Yuck, it didn't work,
all I got is empty folders. I remember there was a message about .htaccess.
Back to square one. Now I remember there being something about the FTP being
different. Does anyone know if copying the files from the main PC to a CD or
thumb drive and put on the laptop would work correctly?

Also, do I make the new folder (with the website name) in the "My Webs"
folder? That's where I put it the first time.

You could use an FTP client such as CUteFTP to download the site to a
folder - Internet Explorer can be used as well by using an address like
ftp://example.com (the same address you publish to). With IE youselect
the folders and files in IE and drag them into the folder in Windows
Explorer.

Publishing to a thumb drive or CDRW will also work - if you use a CDR,
publish to a folder then zip the folder and burn the zip file to the CD.
If you miss the zip file step you will have to remove read only
attributes from the files after copying from CD to laptop.

I used a thumb drive and now the website is on the laptop. Things look okay
in the "navigation" view and when I open different pages and view in
browser. I think I will check it out a little more before installing
Expression Web.

I might ask too many questions but I like to ask what others think/know
before I act in order to hopefully avoid more problems. Now on to the next
step.

Thanks again for your help.

Suggest you run Tools->Recalculate Hyperlinks to make sure the meta data
is correctly updated for the new location.

You should not have any problems in FrontPage, but note that Expression
Web does not provide a navigation view, but does support existing
FrontPage navigation bars.
