Mouse Weirdness, Doesn't Click

I bought a Microsoft Optical Mouse and used on on XP for a while and it was
great. Brought it to a Win2K machine and plugged it in and it acts
strangely. The double click won't work. The mouse will only allow me to
select. To open a folder I have to right click it and choose open. When you
click on the window navigation pane into the empty area that should scroll
the window down a page it goes a few pages as though the mouse was clicked
like 3 times. Anyone have any idea what is going on here?

In addition, my computer doesn't want to automatically shut down and I have
to manually turn it off with the power button after it is "safe" to shut
down. I'm assuming that is a power mode function of some sort maybe in the
bios?

Thank you all for helping.

The bios is the latest. It's a well known motherboard, the MSI K7S5A with
the latest drivers. The mouse should have been fine and seems to work just
plugging it in to most systems but not this one. Will check again to see but
doubtful. Thanks.

do you have another mouse/USB port or is it PS/2? to try sounds like it
could be hardware
