Mouse stopped working

I have been using a MS USB optical Intellimouse for several years. Several
days ago, it stopped working. I got a pop-up telling me that one of my usb
devices had a problem and may stop working. Sure enough, it did. The cursor
froze on the screen and all buttons were non-responsive. I tried re-booting,
re-installing the drivers from an Intellimouse disc, rolling back the OS to
an earlier restore point, and a new usb mouse which also doesn't function
properly. It was completely dysfunctional with a usb connection. With a
PS2 adaptor it worked for two or three minutes then failed again. However,
the buttons appear to have some function with the PS2 connection.

the device manager reports no problems with the USB hub but lists no HID.
the Help & Support system info tool also shows everything working properly.

When I un-plug and reconnect the mouse, Windows reports that an unknown USB
device has been attached.

Any ideas? It is really a pain to MouseKeys and keyboard shortcuts to
function.

Try another mouse, it looks like your old one is dead. Borrow one or buy a
cheap one for about £3 UK and test your system, or just go buy a new one.
Try your old mouse in a friends system to make sure but it sounds like it
died. When you confirm your old mouse is dead buy a decent quality one as
cheap mice are fine for testing but no good to use all the time.

As I indicated in the original post, I did buy and try a new mouse. It
didn't work in USB mode and worked for 2-3 minutes in PS/2 mode then stopped.
I tried the old mouse on my son's computer and it worked fine.

The problem is in the OS somewhere or at least it appears so to me.
