Mouse still freezing up for no particular reason

C

Citizen Kane

I took some of the advice here from a previous thread and checked the
drivers. Couldn't find what I was looking for.

So I rolled back the computer (well, Windows XP) to a previous time. Still
didn't work.

I uninstalled all HP software. Still freezing up, but not as often and not
as randomly.

I don't get it...shouldn't removing all the HP components off of my system
for a re-install have worked, since the noise that the computer gives me
when these freezings occur is the same noise that was put on my system for
the printer?

Hi there,
usually in this case I would either update the video driver or replace the
card with a different type of video card. If that doesn't work it could be a
faulty processor, which I would try reseating first before replacing.

Kane,

Excuse me if I am wrong here.. I do not believe that anything is wrong with
your video card so don't go out and spend 60 bucks on a new one! If I am
correct the noise you believe was put on by hp for your printer is probably
the noise Windows XP makes when you plug and unplug a USB device. If your
mouse is not USB then I may be wrong but that is what it is sounding like to
me. You could have a faulty USB port or a faulty mouse. I would try
plugging the mouse into another USB port and seeing if it keeps happening.
If that does not fix it then I would imagine that your Mouse is bad and you
need to replace it....(as long as all other USB devices such as a printer do
not cut in and out in which case you would need to get a PCI USB card or
replace your motherboard). But again if I am wrong here and you do not have
a USB mouse then my solution is not correct.

Get a USB mouse. Zero problems with them (apart from loosing a USB port).

Your mouse may simply be defective or defective motherboard.

My brand spanking new HP N3+ optical mouse will randomly jump all over the
screen for no reason. Tried a new cheap logitech optical mouse and same
thing happens but less randomly. I concluded that either the USB chipset or
the BIOS on my HP d1000e is flawed in design or I was just really unlucky
and got two dud mice in a row. Who knows.

I have learned to live with it until it breaks completely. Don't feel like
throwing any more money at the problem.

This happens to me and I've read a few others. It's claimed it jets to
the start button, not true, my start button is at the top (ala Amiga,
old Mac) it just takes a dive to bottom left.

One time it went to the upper right and starting drawing a square
(real quick, real small) until I touched the mouse which was sitting
idle.

I broke down and installed intellipoint (mouse drivers) - it happens
less often now.

The noise? A windows sound? Open Control Panel - Sounds and audio
devices - Sounds, and play each sound until you find one associated to
your problem and work from there.

You can download and run Process Explorer when your mouse freezes.
http://www.sysinternals.com/Utilities/ProcessExplorer.html
Find the offending program, read it's image and see what's causing
this.

You can set up a keyboard shortcut to launch PE, then use the Tab,
Arrow, and enter key(s) to get around, Practice this so when you loose
your mouse you can navigate.

If it is a CPU usage problem (system freezes) - just leave PE running,
click on CPU to get the high usage programs on top of the list and
when it happens read what program is involved.

It is very annoying when this happens while playing games online. It will
always cost me a virtual life.

I figure that it has to be a problem within the BIOS as the ATi chipset is
brand new Athlon 64 technology.

My HP optical mouse is PS2 model and the Logitech is a USB model so I doubt
it is a USB chipset problem.

Ya, been there, lately it's in Quake4 - I spin in a circle and end up
looking at the ground; by the time I get my bearings I'm toast :)

If you ask about it you'll be told to install new drivers, you've got
malware, your mouse is dirty or buy a new one :)

Typical response by a script monkey, just cluelessly following a printed or
on-screen script. HP must have its share, too. So does Dell. So does Gateway.

I know, that's why I prefer not to deal with HP. I have dealt with them and
other Corporate types before. At least they are better than Dell in that
repect though.

I thought about trying a cheap older ball mouse or one of the newer double
laser optical mice but not in any hurry to throw more money at the problem.

Yep, some of the helpful and knowledgeable techs are outsourced in third
world countries by big business and have never own a PC before in their
life. And they are going to solve your problems LOL.

In contrast, I have been building my own PCs since the late 80s yet here is
this clueless guy telling me there is nothing wrong with my equipment.
Pfft! Don't care to go down that road before. I have better luck with
common sense and a hammer.

As Trax suggested, unless you have an optical mouse, your mouse is dirty.
Its time to clean it.

Most mice I've seen had a retainer ring surrounding the ball. You rotate
the ring a quarter turn counterclockwise, turn it over and the ring and
ball should fall out in your hand.

I usually use a thin-bladed pocket knife to peel the junk off of the
rollers inside. Then blow out any loose debris and re-assemble.

If you haven't cleaned it in a while, it can make a world of difference.
