Need troubleshooting help on freeze ups

Hi All,

I need some tips on a troubleshoot I am doing.

A customer has an XP Pro system hooked up in his
conference room. He like to just be able to walk
into the room with his customers and have the
computer fired up and working. The computer is
~5 years old (P4) but still working well, other
than the following problem.

Problem: it freezes up when unintended. Video
is blank; keyboard and mouse are dead.

Currently:
--Screen saver on or disabled: no difference
--Power saving and hibernate are never
--Nothing is written to the logs when it freezes

Here is the kicker. This only happens when it
is *unattended*. I have Ultra VNC hooked up
so I can see when it freezes: it will never freeze
while I am monitoring it. If I or anyone else
walks over and wiggles the mouse, it won't
freeze.

I am thinking the power supply. What does the
group think?

Many thanks,
-T

think you need
to do a clean
boot and dedicate
the machine to the
task at hand.

also, me thinks you
might want to turn
off indexing and
ensure disks are
not set to turn off
via power control
panel..

Disks are set to never. I will check
indexing. Thank you,

Hi db,

You called it. It was the indexing. I turned it off
Tuesday before last and it has been running "unattended"
for over a week now without a freeze up.

Thank you so much!
