Mouse Scheme Issue

B

In an apparently random manner, my mouse pointer changes to an icon
that is not even present in the mouse scheme!

When I mouse over, for example, the toolbar portion of Excel, my mouse
cursor changes to the pointer with hourglass (i.e. "wait") icon. My
current "Working In Background" icon is set to the pointer cross-hair;
the pinter with hourglass is not present anywhere in my current mouse
scheme. And the behavior is random: sometimes mouse-over toolbar
causes the change, other times mouse-over .cs file in edit mode of
Visual Studio causes it. Not only is it annoying but it makes it
difficult to work. For example, when editing code in Visual Studio, I
expect to see the vertical "beam" whcih makes it easy to click where I
want to edit. It is also difficult to autoFit columns in Excel
because the poniter is bulky.

Any ideas appreciated!

I am curious what your Options settings are in the Customize dialog box.

Mine are
1) Large icons - unchecked
2) Show ScreenTips on toolbars - checked
3) Menu animations - (None)

Right-click the Toolbar
Select Customize
Click the Options tab

Hi Michael,

I assume you mean the Options settings in specific apps? The problem
is not application-specific, but to satisfy your curiosity:

In Visual Studio 2005,
Use large icons - unchecked
Show ScreenTips on toolbars - checked

In Excel 2007, these options are not available in the same place and
can't find them right now.

As I mentioned, this problem is not app-specific, nor uniform. For
example, while I was typeing this message, the pointer -w- hourglass
appeared above IE. I alt+tabbed to a different app, alt+tabbed back
to IE and only the pointer appeared (no hourglass).
