Missing mouse pointer schemes

It seems like I've lost half of the long list of schemes available in mouse
properties. I used a large arrow scheme before but now I use the smaller
default system scheme one. In Options in Mouse Properties>pointers I still
have all the 180 or so cursors listed in there, but they are different from
the ones missing in the schemes list. This all started after I added "mouse
pointers" in windows components in add/remove programs. Sometime after that I
got a long list of error messages when I tried to access the Mouse>Mouse
Properties>Pointers, something about missing or corrupted files. I tried
uninstalling and reinstalling the Mouse Pointers in windows components but no
change. Then I tried reinstalling the 180 +/- cursors in the Windows/Cursors
folder from a download I found on the web but that didn't do anything about
the missing schemes. So I'm stuck, anyone have an idea how I can get all the
schemes back that I once had?
Thanks, Bob

DatabaseBen

you could have downloaded spywares
disguised as mouse schemes.

you can boot up with your windows cd,
setup, select new install, then point to
the installation of windows it finds
on your harddrive and say yes to
repairing it...

Hi Bob,

Download schemes.zip, unzip and extract schemes.reg to Desktop. Right-click the REG file and choose Merge.

http://windowsxp.mvps.org/reg/schemes.zip

Note: The cursor paths are hard-coded for C:\Windows\Cursors. If you have installed Windows in a different drive/path, edit the REG file in Notepad and update the drive-letter / Path accordingly.

Hint: You may use the "Replace All" option in Notepad.

DatabaseBen

sometimes the system files
become unstable or corrupted.
it use to be that reinstalling the
operating system was the best
way to get the pc back in shape.
but now, you can repair the system
instead of replacing it with a
"repair installation" via the windows
setup cd.

when you d.l. those mouse
schemes, you overwrote
the system files, installed
unprovened ones and maybe
downloaded other files yet
to be discovered or recognized
by antivirals.

bootup with it, select new install,
the cd will find your current
windows, point to it and say
yes to repair it instead of replacing
it.

Okay, an update- I downloaded the Cursors file from your website again,
Ramesh, and extracted the files to my desktop. The mouse pointer I want is in
there (arrow_m), as well as the other "missing" ones in C:\Windows|Cursors.
So it seems like there is something going on with those files when trying to
install them in my system- like DatabaseBen was saying about corruption
/instability maybe when I overwrote files or ??? Would be great if there
was a way to get the file(s) I need into the Cursors folder.

I used System Restore to go back a couple days before I first encountered
the mouse pointer issue, all the schemes and cursors are installed but
unfortunately I still get an error message that I have corrupted or missing
files- the same cursor files as before.

I neglected to mention that a couple weeks ago I had my XP OS reinstalled by
a shop after my hard drive went bad and I wonder if somehow during that some
of the cursor files weren't installed or corrupted. I may have had this
cursor problem since then or even before since I just noticed my cursor was
the default size and not the larger one I used to have. Again, I noticed in
C:\Windows\Cursors that I'm missing the cursor files that should be in there.
The one I really want is arrow_m.cur file (Windows Standard [large] )- can I
try to find it on my XP CD and put it in my C:\Windows\Cursors folder if
that's possible? Thanks

Ramesh, btw last night I found your site and downloaded the zip file on this
page:
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/mousepointers.htm
- the zipfile was called Cursors instead of Themes and was smaller as it
obviously didn't have themes in it I guess. Anyway, I extracted it per
instructions and installed it the Windows\Cursors folder but there were no
additional pointers viewable in the Mouse properties\Pointers list, FWIW. I
used my XP installation CD- Bob

Ramesh, thanks for the help & link. I downloaded to my desktop & extracted
schemes-reg there, then right-clicked it and clicked Merge. I checked the
Mouse properties and the missing pointers were added- BUT, when I clicked on
the one I wanted 'Windows Standard [large] I got an error message saying:
"The C:\Windows\Cursors\arrow_m.cur file, which contains the "normal select"
cursor, is either missing or corrupt." This happens with four other 'new'
cursors -Windows Inverted, Inverted [large] & Inverted [extra large], and
Windows Standard [extra large]. All the other older ones work fine. I checked
in the C:\Windows\Cursors folder and the new pointers in question aren't in
there. ???

Problem solved!

I removed all cursor files from my C:\Windows\Cursors and put them in a temp
folder. Then I extracted the Cursor.zip file Ramesh had sent me earlier and
installed those files to the Cursors folder. Voila, when checking in Mouse
Properties they were all there and all the previous missing ones work fine
now. I should have emptied the Cursors folder earlier before installing the
new cursor.zip contents I guess. Of course a simple fix to this problem ,
after a bit of aggravation! Thanks all for your help, Bob
