erratic movement of mouse when wheel is used

Remove the ball and clean all the dirts inside, especially the X and Y axis.

Also, if this is an optical mouse, try uninstalling the software for it,
reboot, and reinstall the software. Also, try a different USB port if
that is how you are using it. Oh, and try to include make and model of
hardware when you post so it makes it more specific and easier to help
