Mouse problems wih noebook and WindowXP Prof

I have just bought a new HP notebook with windows xp
proffessional already installed. When I connect an
external mouse it behaves totally eratically and no
amount of twidling with or reinstalling will make itwork
properly. I

Odds are it's a flawed mouse. Try a different mouse.

I recall reading somewhere that the solution was to disable the laptop's
built in mouse, there is a conflict between the two drivers. Do a Google
search, preferably in the Groups and see what you find.

Laptop "mouse pad" and usb-connected Microsoft mouse works
simultaneously on my Toshiba.
