Recently, I have been experiencing the following problem
with my Microsoft Optical Wheel Mouse(USB type using a
PS2 adapter):
After starting up my computer(My OS is MS WinXP Pro), I
hear system 'BEEPS' and my mouse pointer starts to freeze
up periodically. It is very annoying because when the
mouse starts to respond again, it seems to remember all
the movements I made while is was in the 'suspended'
state and I have to reposition it where I want it to be.
More often than not, when I try to reposition the mouse
pointer, it freezes again and I have wait until it
responds again to try and reposition it again! Very
annoying! This continues to happen periodically (the
beeping and freezing) until it finally freezes and does
not recover. At this point, I have to shut down the
computer (using keyboard functions to close all programs
first and then to shut down properly) and restart it
again. I have checked for viruses with NAV2004 (I've got
the latest virus defs) but no viruses are detected. At
this point, I believe that it can only be one of two
things: The mouse is physically defective or I've got
some type of file corruption that is causing this erratic
behavior. I've checked the device in Device Manager and
it says that the device is working properly. No
conflicts or problems are reported in System Information
or in any of the logs. I recently installed a USB Multi-
Card Reader and initially, I thought this may be the root
of the problem but I can't find any evidence that
supports this notion (I've disconnected this device but
the mouse problem still exists). Has anyone run into a
similar situation or can suggest any possible solutions?
Your help will be greatly appreciated.
