mouse/hardware problems

Every once in a while my mouse freezes up for several
seconds, during which the sounds for "device connect" and
"device disconnect" play. This started after I reinstalled
XP Professional a while back. The mouse is USB.
 
Check that the mouse is properly connected and the wire is not damaged...
That's all I can really say. Maybe it needs special drivers.
