mouse position at startup

On starting Windows XP I would like the mouse cursor to be positioned in the
password box (There's just one account on the machine) The pointer is
currently positioned outside the box to the left. I'd just like to be able to
enter my password immediately after startup without having to position the
mouse and clicking inside the login box?

If you just wait a couple of seconds the the text select cursor will start
blinking in the password box.

What difference does the initial position of the mouse pointer make?
If there's only one account displayed on the Welcome Screen, the typing
cursor is already automatically pre-positioned in the Password field.
Simply ignore the mouse and type your password.

Hi Philip,

This method has seemed to change for many XP users around the time of the
..Net Framework update. Either way, this was the default method for the
behavior you are speaking of:

Password Prompt Open for User:

This will only happen if you have no other users listed on the Welcome
Screen, including the System Admin account and the Guest account. The Guest
account must be disabled.

Added info if needed and good luck!

You can use TweakUI for XP to uncheck accounts on the Welcome Screen under

Sorry - no that doesn't work. The Loggin box is not active until you click
inside it. In other installations I've had - the loggin box was active at
boot up?
 
First off - thank you all, Foxhole, Bruce and Kelly for your responses.
Is there not a registry key that controls the Password Prompt.
I'd like to have the password prompt box enabled at startup - currently it
is not enabled until I click on the account name. I have no other account on
the machine nor is guest account enabled.

OK, I've found a work-around. Thank you all for your help.
I've resolved the problem by unchecking the welcome screen with Start>
Control Panel > User Acounts > Change The Way Users Log On and Off.

After start-up the cursor is now positioned directly in the password box.
Great! that's good enough for me!

You are most welcome, Philip. Surely didn't realize that you meant the old
W2K style login. Most Welcome Screen users miss the cursor for the single
pc user. Either way, glad you have it sorted and thanks for the feedback!
