Erratic Mouse Behavior

E

EG

After about an hour or so of use, I get weird mouse behavior that has
nothing to do with the mouse itself. Documents zoom in at random, IE and
other browser screens scroll without any reason, click_hold actions on drop
downs don't hold and the my ability to control the cursor position with the
mouse drops become severely limited though it doesn't disappear completely.
Rebooting makes the issue go away for a while but it inevitably reappears. I
have tried the following:

-New mouse
-Different USB port (with new mouse and existing mouse)
-Reinstalled mouse drivers (I think I did this correctly)
-MS Malware scan
-Upgraded to XP Pro SP 3
-Reverted system to previous restore point prior to onset of problem

None of these have worked. This feels like malware but the scan tool found
nothing. My next step is a repair install of Windows or possible upgrade to
Vista. Any advice before these steps would be appreciated.

Ball mouse or Optical ? - What type of surface does the mouse rest on ?:
Vendor & Model information would help. As to configuration, do you use
the vendor control software ( IntelliPoint, SetPoint, MouseWare ) or just
the Mouse control applet in Control Panel.

Most recent mice come with a USB-to-PS/2 converter module. You may
want to try connecting the mouse to your Green PS/2 socket and see if
the issues reappear. If so then this may be a USB issue.

Mouse is on a mouse pad. I used two different mice and had the same prolem.
Again, it appears only after I've been using the machine for an hour or so.
That's why it feels like a software issue.

There is no place for a mouse other than the USB port. There does not
appear to be a PS2 jack on the back of the PC.

Thanks for the follow-up information. Usually a Wireless mouse is a
USB 1(.1) device. If you have multiple USB sockets on your PC I'd
try moving the mouse connection to one of those. It's possible you're
using a Root Hub that is close to being overloaded. A USB Wireless
mouse has a composite driver so it should only consume 100mA of
the 500ma available.

Software issues don't usually come and go. Hardware problems are, however,
evanescent, particularly if heat is involved.

Is this a laptop with some kind of built-in pointing device? If so, try
adjusting the sensitivity down.

The mouse is connected to a desktop computer. While all the USB ports are
being used, nothing was added that prior to the start of the problems.
Again, I swapped out the mouse with a corded USB Optical mouse and changed
the USB port. For what it's worth, BTW, I went from one of the rear ports to
one of the front panel ones.

What make of mouse? Most mice will work with the "default" drivers in
XP. The additional features (such as enhanced mouse pointers) are in
these "extra" mouse drivers.

Also, what other USB devices are used?

The mouse is a Microsoft wireless laser mouse 5000. Wireless "quality" is
high according to the control panel. Batteries were just replaced with fresh
tested ones. Other USB devices that are always connected are two printers and
an external dvd drive. Of course these are usually idle. No hardware
changes of any kind were made prior to the onset of the problems. Driver of

It is easy to test if the mouse surface / pad is not working well.
Replace it with a blank sheet of paper. If the mouse behaves, you
have a surface problem

Mouse pad. Not a shiny surface. Nothing has changed prior to the onset of
the issue.

Same mouse pad has been used for a while. Nothing was changed prior to
