Mouse not detected after system boots up

I have a 128mb RAM/Intel Pentium 3,800 Mhz CPU /20GB HDD
and OS as Windows 2000.
For last 1 month or so, the 3 button mouse (which has
intellimouse drivers - sermouse.sys and mouclass.sys ) is
not detected when I start my system.
The pointer is not to be seen when the 'Starting windows
2000' screen appears.
I have tried uninstalling & re-installing the comm port
(1) and the drivers. It gets detected sometimes (a few)
after new hardware is added through safe mode. The mouse
is then also not detected in safe mode.
I also receive an error message -unhandled exception in VC
module related to svchost.exe every time i surf the
internet...though the error may appear anytime.
When I scanned the system for viruses....using Norton
Antivirus Systemworks 2004 (for winodws 2000), I found W32
Blaster worm, which was removed.

My mouse is not at all detected even after its gets
installed. In device manager the mouse drivers and
publication / version details appear blank. No mouse
properties are shown under mouse in control panel.

At times it may be detected on its own. Is it a hardware
or a software corruption that is causing the problem ? Wil
l I need to re-install windows 2000 or can I repair the
problem using some other option ?
The mouse appears to be physically fine...I am using a
comm port to connect my mouse. No keyboard interference.
Do I need to verify IRQ conflicts ?
Please advice..thanks.

<snip>

even though the virus was removed, it could still have done some damage

if you cannot get it sorted out,
you can boot off your win2k cd and do a *repair* installation

It almost sounds like a bad port. Do you have diagnostic
software that will run a check on the mouse. The other
thing to do to eliminate mouse driver issues is to try a
USB mouse. See if that helps.
