mouse likes to cause trouble

Hello to the Forum,

I have a problem with the mouse pad on my HP Notebook. My Father can't
understand it, and the computer shops don't seem to understand either. So I
put it out there to anyone in the Newsgroups for your help. Here is the
problem:

The mouse at times acts up, does'nt scroll when I ask it. It also at times
has a rectangular box which is 1/2 inch long and 1/8 wide. It has a small
arrow at each end, don't know what it is. When it attaches to mouse arrow, it
will not scroll, and then at times the scroller is quite loose. Does anyone
know what this problem is?

Any suggestions or comments would be great!! Thank you for the help!!

It is an HP Notebook-OmniBook XE3, Windows XP, approx. a 2001 model, and has
the Norton-Antivirus system.

I really appreciate your fast response to my problem with my mouse. I took
your advice and tried another mouse and I don't seem to have any problems
now.
