Mouse help!!

I have windows xp and I have a ps/2 mouse and it works fine. I had a new
mouse given to me and it has to plug into the usb port in the back of the
computer. In other words, it does not have the same plug in as the mouse I
use now. Anyhow, I plugged it into the usb port in the back, and it worked,
but a couple of months ago my son told me it just quit working. So, I talked
to the company that gave me the mouse, and they sent me another one identical
to the one they originally gave me, and it won't work either. I plugged my
old mouse back in and it works fine, but it won't let me use any mouse that
has a usb plug in on it. I went into device manager and under mice is has
ps/2 listed and that is it. I checked the usb and have clicked on update
driver, and it says more or less that I have all the up to date drivers. I
have shut down computer and rebooted and it still will not work. Any
suggestions?

Have you tried plugging in the mouse and rebooting? Plug and play should
sense new device and install it.

Oops I see you tried that. Did you go to control panel ---mouse--and set the
type of mouse you have?

Yes I did, and it still will not work.

I may have a different mouse driver but, in control panel buttons tab, do
you have on lower right side 'Type of mouse connected'?

No, there isn't anything like that there.

I believe you'll have to update your driver if you change from a PS2 to a
USB mouse.

Don't you have an adapter, one end is USB and the other is PS/2 that way you
should be able to use it by still connecting it to the PS/2 port.
