Mouse hangup

Vista Ultimate on a Toshiba U200 Satellite. Microsoft Optical Wheel Mouse,
2-button. Touch pad pointer disabled.
Periodically, the mouse freezes. System still runs and can be controlled by
the keyboard, but that is awfully inconvenient. Each such freeze is
accompanied by a soft ping-ping from the sound system. Sometimes, the mouse
unfreezes after a while, accompanied by the same soft ping, but often a
restart is necessary.
Looked in the Event Log - System log reports error event ID 7026 on startup.
Latest refence to this I found in KB was for NT 4.0 No events in iether
System or App logs at the time the freeze occurs.

Any ideas? Thanks.

Might be worth running task manager and minimising
it to the Tray where the icon will still show activity.
Maybe it hits 100% cpu. Task manager will also
show runnung tasks. See if any are mouse related.
Right clicking then Properties should identify what
some process are associated with. Like I see 3
processes associated with a Logitecth Marble
mouse that I only use occasionally.
I did have mouse freezing problems with
Vista Ultimate 64 bit and 512 MB RAM, which
disappeared with 4 GB Crucial.

Thanks for the response. I think I've traced the problem to a bad USB hub
which internittently loses communication with the mouse.
