i have gateway notebook running win2k. the computer has a
mouse touchpad. suddenly this morning my computer is
making a noise like in the old pong game when you trapped
the ball against the wall...just a constant
pingpingpingping in rapid succession. It stops
occassionally and briefly when I click on something, but
starts right back up. MS Help is occassionally launched
through no action of my own. while i was clicking around
trying to get it to stop, an application was randomly
(seemingly) launched (winzip). i am using an external
mouse, but the problem didn't stop when i disconnected that
and restarted. the computer can't be used in this state.

any advice greatly appreciated, and thanks in advance.

Your first step should be to determine if this is a hardware
or a software problem. Many notebooks come with a
diagnostic disk, or else they have a diagnostic program
built into the BIOS. Use it to test your mouse. If the test
runs OK then Windows has a problem. If the test fails
then you have a hardware problem.

Thanks Pegasus.

I tried to go into diagnostics pressing F8, but didn't
work. Realized that the keyboard is dead too. Fortunately
I happen to have another identical chassis (bought two at
the time, one is a spare). I put the drive in the spare
chassis and it works fine. So is there a way to
troubleshoot the original computer?

F8 does NOT launch the BIOS program! It's often
"Delete", F1, F2 or some other keyboard combination.
If unsure, read the manual that came with your laptop.
