mouse doesnt work after install XPSP1 or SP2

I've tried several times to install SP1 and 2 on my XP Professional operating
system, and even when I had XP Home Edition, but every time my mouse (which
is optical and connects USB) quits even being listed in device manager. I've
tried several "mice" (hee-hee) even used the USB-to-mouse port adaptor with
no luck. Tried "add hardware wizard" but can never get it to list what I
need. Why does this happen and how can I make it work? Reinserting mouse
doesn't make it recognize it. I've tried everything, and its really hard to
maneauver around windows without a mouse when that's what you're used to,
although getting pretty good at it now. HELP!! reply here or to Faith @

SP1 modifies XP so as to install the USB 2.0 drivers. SP2 contains all the
updates that were in SP1 and adds the one that come out after SP1 (and up to
the date of the SP2 release.)

Once you have installed Sp1, remove all USB root hub, controllers and all HID
devices in Device Manager and Reboot. This would make XP re-detect all the
USB devices and should place the correct drivers.

BTW: If the USB to mouse port adapter was not delivered with the mouse, that
mouse may not actually work on the mouse port. Each mouse must have the logic
for USB/mouse port in order for the mouse to work on either.
