Assuming the sound is coming from the speakers, try this:
Start
Control Panel
Sounds and Audio Devices
Sounds tab
Program Events:
Scroll through the events to see which ones are generating the annoying
sound. For example, is Select shown with a sound icon?
Highlight the event and expand the Sounds scroll box, then choose (none).
Apply
